Kulgam produced quality garlic worth Rs 7.22 Cr this year; highest producer in the country

Kulgam, June 8: Kulgam district cultivates one of the finest garlic varieties in the country, with 166 hectares dedicated to garlic farming yielding 1826 metric tons of dry garlic annually and generates substantial revenue of 7.22 crore rupees for the district.

Garlic, an ODOP product of Kulgam famous has played a key role in sustaining the livelihood of native farmers, besides significantly boosting the district’s economy.

District Agriculture Officer, Malik Riyaz said that under the Government of India’s One District, One Product (ODOP) initiative, Kulgam was selected as “Garlic District” owing to an exceptional quality of its garlic.

“Country has been using various technologies to increase the garlic output, he said, adding that In future we would get ahead of China, which is the largest producer of garlic in the world followed by our country,” he said.

Experts from the agriculture department said that versatility of Kulgam garlic is a key factor in its selection for the ODOP initiative.

“Kulgam garlic can be used in various forms, including fresh, dry, garlic paste and pickles, and natural chemicals in Kulgam garlic are of such high quality that they are unmatched” they said.
