Hope Govt Will Rethink Its Policy on Release of Political Prisoners: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

Srinagar, May 31: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed hope that the government would reconsider its policy regarding the release of political prisoners by adopting a more humane approach and showing some leniency.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was allowed to offer Friday congregational prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar after a four-week gap. Following the prayers, he addressed reporters and conveyed his expectations for the new central government’s understanding of the valley’s situation and the initiation of measures aimed at achieving sustained peace.

In his statement, Mirwaiz emphasized that the Hurriyat Conference has consistently advocated for resolution through dialogue, despite the hardships faced in this pursuit. He pointed out that several youths and political prisoners from Jammu and Kashmir remain incarcerated, and he called for their release as a step towards reconciliation.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also highlighted issues related to the verification process for jobs and passports, describing them as overly complicated. He urged the government to show leniency in these matters to alleviate the difficulties faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

He reiterated the need for a humane and realistic approach from the government, emphasizing that leniency in these policies could pave the way for improved relations and understanding. Mirwaiz expressed optimism that the new government at the Centre would recognize the importance of such initiatives.

The Hurriyat leader’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment in the region, where many hope for policy changes that would lead to a more peaceful and stable environment. The call for dialogue and humane treatment underscores the ongoing challenges and aspirations within the valley.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s appeal comes at a time of significant political transition in India, with the expectation that new leadership might bring fresh perspectives and approaches to longstanding issues. His message is one of hope for constructive engagement and positive change.

The Hurriyat Conference remains committed to dialogue as the path to resolution, and Mirwaiz’s call for leniency and humane policies is a reminder of the importance of compassion in governance. The future steps taken by the government will be closely watched by all stakeholders in the region.
