A resident of Bihar has been sentenced to eight years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 20,000 by a fast-track court in Srinagar for kidnapping and raping a 15-year-old girl in Habba Kadal area in 2016. Renu Dogra Gupta, 2nd Additional Sessions Judge, handed down the sentence and imposed the fine on Santosh Kumar Paswan after convicting him four days earlier.

The court found Paswan guilty of offenses punishable under Section 363 RPC (kidnapping). Both sentences are to run concurrently, with the period already served taken into account. Prosecution was represented by APP Farooq Malik in the case filed under FIR No.32 of 2016 at Police Station Kralkhud, Srinagar.

According to the prosecution, the victim’s father reported her missing, suspecting Paswan, who had been working at their house, of enticing her. The girl and the kidnapper were intercepted near Humhama, heading suspiciously towards the airport. They were apprehended, and evidence including the motorcycle and air tickets were seized.

Medical examination revealed the victim to be pregnant, indicating the gravity of the crime. The prosecution highlighted Paswan’s exploitation of the victim’s minority and immaturity, establishing illegal relations with her. The verdict underscores the judiciary’s commitment to delivering justice in cases of heinous crimes against minors.
