Continued Sub-zero Temperatures in Kashmir, Srinagar Dips to -4.7°C
Srinagar, Feb 11 (WD): Sub-zero temperatures persisted in Jammu and Kashmir as Srinagar recorded a low of -4.7°C on Saturday.
According to a meteorological department official speaking to Wattandaily.com, Srinagar’s temperature rose by two notches from the previous night’s -4.9°C, remaining 4.9°C below normal for this time of the year.
Qazigund saw a minimum of -4.4°C, down from -5.8°C the previous night, marking a 3.4°C deviation from normal temperatures for the gateway town of Kashmir.
Pahalgam registered -7.9°C, slightly warmer than the previous night’s -8.6°C, still 2.9°C below the resort’s normal temperature in south Kashmir.Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded a minimum of -3.2°C, down from -3.7°C, showing a 1.7°C deviation from normal.
In north Kashmir, Kupwara town saw a low of -4.3°C, 3.1°C below normal, while Gulmarg reported -6.5°C, 0.3°C below normal for the skiing resort.
Jammu experienced a minimum of 7.8°C, 2.3°C below normal for the winter capital of J&K.Banihal recorded a low of 4.2°C, Batote -0.3°C, and Bhaderwah -0.6°C, the official added.
The forecast suggests dry weather until February 17, with occasional cloudy evenings expected around February 14. From February 18-20, there’s a possibility of light snow and rain.
As the 40-day harsh winter period known as ‘Chillai-Kalan’ ended on January 29, Kashmir is currently in the midst of the 20-day-long ‘Chillai-Khurd’ period, which concludes on February 19, followed by the 10-day ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) period from February 20 to March 1.
