Headline: Srinagar Experiences Coldest Night of the Season at Minus 5.6°C

Srinagar, January 7: As freezing conditions persist in the Kashmir Valley, Srinagar encountered the coldest night of the season with the mercury dropping to minus 5.6°C. The Meteorological Department reported a two-notch decrease compared to the previous night, making it 3.7°C below normal for this time of year in the summer capital of J&K.

The minimum temperature surpassed the records set on December 13 last year and January 6 this year, hitting minus 5.6°C in the city. Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 5.0°C, 1.9°C below normal for this gateway town. Meanwhile, Pahalgam reached minus 6.5°C, slightly above normal, and Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded minus 2.7°C, 1.3°C above normal.

In north Kashmir, Kupwara town recorded minus 5.3°C, Gulmarg at minus 4.4°C, and Jammu reached a minimum of 3.4°C, marking the coldest night of the season. The Kashmir valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day harsh winter period lasting until January 30, followed by ‘Chillai-Khurd’ and ‘Chillai-Bachha.’

The Meteorological Department anticipates generally dry weather until January 8, with a possibility of light rain/snow in “extreme isolated higher reaches” on January 9. From January 10-14, generally dry weather is expected, with no significant weather activity predicted until January 14.
