MeT Predicts Extended Wet Spell: Jan 28 to Feb 3
The Meteorological Department (MeT) has announced an extended wet spell for Jammu and Kashmir, spanning from the afternoon of January 28 to February 3. This forecast comes as two Western Disturbances are anticipated to impact the region and its adjacent areas.
Possibility of Heavy Snowfall in Higher Reaches
According to a meteorological department official, the influence of these weather systems is expected to result in an “extended” wet spell from Sunday afternoon onwards until February 3. On January 28-29, there is a likelihood of light to moderate rain/snow at many places, with the possibility of heavy snowfall over isolated higher reaches of the Kashmir Division during the night of January 28 and into the afternoon and evening of January 29.
Forecast for Jan 30 to Feb 3
From January 30-31, there’s a possibility of light to moderate rain and snow at many places, with chances of heavy snowfall over a few higher reaches. From February 1-3, there’s continued potential for light to moderate rain and snow at many places.
Advisory and Weather Impact
The MeT office has issued an advisory, cautioning that the upcoming weather system may lead to the temporary closure of roads in higher reaches and important passes like Sinthan pass, Mughal Road, Sadhna, and Razdan pass, Zojila, particularly during January 28-31. Travelers are advised to plan accordingly.
Farmers have been advised to withhold irrigation and fertilizer application and drain out excess water from orchards and fields during this period. A significant drop in day temperature is expected during the mentioned period.
Temperature Trends
Night temperatures remain above normal at most places, with Srinagar recording a low of minus 2.3°C, Qazigund at 2.2°C, and Gulmarg at minus 6.4°C. Jammu recorded a minimum of 7.0°C.
Chillai-Kalan and Beyond
The Kashmir valley is currently experiencing the 40-day harsh winter period known as Chillai-Kalan, which is set to end on January 29. Following this, a 20-day-long period called Chillai-Khurd occurs between January 30 and February 19, followed by a 10-day-long period called Chillai-Bachha from February 20 to March 1.
