Traffic Advisory: Jammu & Kashmir’s NH-44 Updates and Travel Guidelines
Traffic Advisory for Jammu and Kashmir:
The Traffic Police Headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir issued a comprehensive advisory highlighting the current traffic situation and upcoming plans for NH-44, the lifeline connecting Jammu to Srinagar. From April 13 to April 14, 2024, slow movement was reported due to HMV breakdowns and poor road conditions along various stretches, necessitating single-lane traffic at several points.
Key Recommendations for Travelers:
Passengers and LMV operators are advised to plan their journeys during the day, avoiding night travel due to the risk of shooting stones between Ramban and Banihal. Load carriers should adhere to specific guidelines, especially for perishable goods, considering the challenges posed by single-lane traffic and road conditions.
Safety Measures for HMV Operators:
HMV operators are urged to avoid overloading, ensure vehicle fitness, and carry sufficient fuel for the journey. Specific regulations apply to HMVs with 6 and 10 tires, with restrictions on certain routes. These measures aim to enhance safety and minimize disruptions on the road.
Traffic Plan for April 15, 2024:
Subject to weather conditions, LMVs will be permitted on NH-44 from both Jammu and Srinagar sides, while HMV movement will be managed based on road assessments. Cut-off timings for LMVs are established to streamline traffic flow, considering the single-lane sections along the route.
Special Instructions for Security Forces:
Security forces are advised to adhere to traffic advisories to prevent congestion, particularly on narrow stretches between Nashree and Banihal. Convoy movements should align with the traffic plan, ensuring minimal disruption to civilian traffic.
Road Closure Updates:
Several key routes, including Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari road, Mughal road, Bhaderwah-Chamba road, and Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag NH-244, remain closed due to adverse weather conditions, including snowfall and mudslides.
Advisory for Travelers:
Travelers are urged to verify the road status from designated Traffic Control Units before embarking on their journeys. Contact numbers for control units across various locations are provided for convenience, ensuring informed decision-making and safe travel experiences.
