Man Dies After Surgery at Srinagar Hospital, Family Alleges Negligence
A 46-year-old man from the Dalgate area of Srinagar, Gulzar Ahmad, passed away at Paras Hospital on Thursday, leading to allegations of medical negligence from his family and relatives.
The family claims that they were assured a 98 percent survival rate for Ahmad’s bypass surgery, but post-surgery, the doctors informed them that his condition had deteriorated and an additional procedure costing Rs 3 lakh was required.
The family alleges that they sold their belongings to raise money for the additional procedure, only to be informed later that Ahmad had died. They are now demanding a thorough investigation into the case and the return of the approximately Rs 6 lakh they claim was taken by the hospital authorities.
The family is speaking out to raise awareness, stating that “this incident happened with us today, but it could happen to anyone tomorrow.” They are seeking justice and accountability from the hospital.
Paras Hospital authorities, however, claim that they counselled the family about the critical and high-risk nature of the surgery. They stated that Ahmad was brought to the hospital in a critical condition and underwent bypass surgery, but despite best efforts, his condition deteriorated, and he succumbed to cardiac arrest.
The hospital extended its “deepest sympathies” to the bereaved family and claimed that a team of senior doctors and surgeons made every effort to save Ahmad.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Srinagar has taken note of the incident and requested the Principal of GMC Srinagar to depute a cardiologist to Paras Hospital to conduct a detailed inquiry into the patient’s death.
The inquiry is scheduled for 10:00 am, and the CMO’s communique reads, “Subsequent to the death of a patient in the cardiology department at Paras Hospital Sonwar, it is requested that one cardiologist may kindly be deputed tomorrow to facilitate a detailed inquiry regarding the death of the patient.”
