JK Police File UAPA Case Against Shia Mourners for ‘Hezbollah Slogans’ in Srinagar

J-K Police File UAPA Case Against Shia Mourners

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against Shia mourners for raising Hezbollah flags and slogans during the 8th Muharram procession in Srinagar.

The police have cited concerns over the potential for such slogans and flags to incite “unrest” and “disturb public order”.

The FIR has been filed at the Kothibagh Police Station in Srinagar under section 13 UAPA and other relevant sections.

The police have not disclosed the identities of those named in the FIR, and an investigation is underway.

Shia mourners took out a procession in Srinagar on Monday, marking the 8th Muharram procession through the traditional Guru Bazaar-Dalgate route.

The procession saw a massive turnout, with mourners commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The police action has been termed as “unwarranted and an assault on freedom of expression” by Member Parliament from Srinagar, Aga Syed Ruhulla Mehdi.

Mehdi has demanded the immediate release of those allegedly arrested by the police, stating that the police should avoid treating them as criminals.
