Election Commission to Review J-K Security Situation Ahead of Assembly Polls
The Election Commission will meet with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Wednesday to assess the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting comes as the EC plans to hold assembly polls in the Union Territory, which have been pending since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
Last week, the EC reviewed poll preparedness in Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating its commitment to holding assembly elections at the earliest.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasized that no external or internal forces can disrupt the electoral process.
The EC’s meeting with the Home Secretary aims to ensure a secure environment for the polls, which will be the first since Jammu and Kashmir’s reorganization into a Union Territory.
The electoral exercise is expected to be spread over a month, with 90 assembly seats up for grabs, excluding those allocated to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The Supreme Court has directed the EC to hold assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, prompting the commission to initiate preparations.
The EC has already ordered the transfer of officers posted in their home districts and the updation of electoral rolls, indicating that assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir are imminent.
