Duo Arrested for Extorting Money from Public, Posing as Police Aides in South Kashmir
In a concerning development, two individuals have been apprehended by the Jammu and Kashmir Police for allegedly siphoning money from the general public in South Kashmir’s Shopian district. The arrests came following a complaint received by the Police Post Keegam in Shopian, detailing a scam where individuals purportedly posed as close associates of the police, exploiting families by demanding money in exchange for releasing their detained relatives.
According to a statement issued by a police spokesperson to news agency Kashmir Scroll, the complaint highlighted the fraudulent activities of certain individuals within the jurisdiction of Police Post Keegam. The accused allegedly masqueraded as police affiliates and coerced money from unsuspecting families, promising the release of their detained kin from legal preventive detentions.
The two individuals identified as Abdul Majeed Lone and Mohammad Iqbal Paul were promptly arrested based on the received complaint. Abdul Majeed Lone, son of Ghulam Mohammad Lone and a resident of Kanipora Balapora, along with Mohammad Iqbal Paul, son of Ali Mohammad Paul from Shirmal Keegam, were taken into custody. Subsequently, a case FIR No 43/2024 U/S 420, 506, 170 IPC was registered against them at the Police Station Shopian, and investigations have commenced.
Authorities have issued a stern warning to the public, urging vigilance and advising against falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.
