12-Year-Old Saves Brother from Leopard Attack in Kashmir

In a remarkable display of bravery, a twelve-year-old boy risked his life to save his younger brother from a leopard attack in central Kashmir’s Budgam district. The incident unfolded as the two brothers were engrossed in a game of cricket in their yard during iftar time on Monday evening.

Recounting the harrowing ordeal, Aqib Javed, a fourth-grade student, described how he sprang into action when he noticed something suspicious near their house. Without hesitation, he intervened as the leopard pounced on his little brother, stating, “I had to save him, he’s my brother.”

Acting swiftly with no weapons at hand, Aqib improvised by throwing a ball from his pocket directly at the leopard’s eye, successfully diverting its attention away from his sibling. However, the danger persisted as the leopard prepared to strike again, until Aqib’s friend joined in by hurling a brick at the predator, causing it to flee amidst the commotion.

Reflecting on the incident, Aqib expressed relief that his brother’s life was spared, especially considering a recent fatal leopard attack in their village. Nevertheless, the family encountered difficulties in seeking immediate medical assistance due to the lack of network facilities in their area.

Struggling with the aftermath, the family highlighted the urgent need for network coverage and measures to mitigate leopard encounters in their village, appealing to the government for support. Meanwhile, villagers praised Aqib for his courage and urged vigilance in ensuring the safety of children, particularly during the evening hours.
