Hawal acid attack: Court sentences convict to life imprisonment, fined Rs 40 lakhs
March 6 (WD) A man from Buchwara Dalgate, identified as Sajid Altaf Sheikh, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court of Principal Sessions Judge Srinagar, Jawad Ahmed.
The verdict was delivered in a crowded courtroom, with the judge also imposing a hefty fine of Rs 40 lakhs on Sheikh. This ruling comes in response to the acid attack perpetrated by Sheikh and a juvenile accomplice, whose identity has been withheld, on a 24-year-old woman in Hawal on February 1, 2022.
The attack occurred after the victim allegedly turned down Sheikh’s marriage proposal, sending shockwaves through the community.
In the aftermath of the incident, law enforcement swiftly acted by establishing a special investigation team led by SP North Raja Zuhaib (JKPS).
The team comprised members from various police stations, including Safakadal, Nowhatta, and the Srinagar Women’s Police station. Tasked with investigating the case under FIR No 08/2022, the team worked under sections 326-A and 120-B IPC to bring justice to the victim and hold the perpetrators accountable.
