Violence continues in Bangladesh; mob storms jail, sets free over 500 inmates

Violence continues to grip Bangladesh, with at least 135 people killed in clashes across the country. The death toll is rising, and the situation remains volatile.

The violence has been ongoing, with police firings, mob beatings, and arson attacks reported in various parts of the country. The unrest began before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation on August 5 and has continued unabated.

In a shocking incident, a mob stormed the district jail in Sherpur, freeing over 500 inmates. The jailbreak highlights the breakdown of law and order in the country.

Despite the Prime Minister’s resignation, protesters continue to roam the streets in Dhaka and other cities. The military has taken power and called for an end to the violence, but the situation remains tense.

The Bangladesh Army has announced that it will lift a curfew imposed to quash protests at dawn today. The move is aimed at restoring normalcy in the country, but it remains to be seen if it will have the desired effect.

Reports of widespread destruction and violence have emerged from various parts of the country. In Jessore, at least eight people were burned to death, and 84 others were injured in an arson attack on a residential hotel.

The political crisis in Bangladesh has deepened, with anti-government protests continuing for weeks. The protests, led by students, demand the abolition of job quotas for relatives of participants in the 1971 war of independence.

An interim government is expected to be formed soon, with leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement proposing a government led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. President Mohammed Shahabuddin has given his nod to form an interim government, but the road ahead remains uncertain.
