Violence Erupts in Bangladesh as Protesters Demand PM’s Resignation

At least 91 people have been killed and hundreds injured in clashes between protesters and ruling party supporters in Bangladesh.

The protests, led by students, are demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation over a job quota system.

The clashes broke out on Sunday morning, with protesters facing opposition from supporters of the Awami League and other groups.

The government has responded by cutting off mobile internet and enforcing a nationwide curfew for an indefinite period.

The situation has prompted authorities to deploy troops, paramilitary border guards, and the elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion alongside police.

Prime Minister Hasina has described those engaging in “sabotage” as terrorists and called on people to suppress them with a firm hand.

A group of former senior military generals has urged the government to withdraw the armed forces from the streets and send them back to barracks.

The protests have received support from various political, professional, and cultural groups, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies.
