Weatherman predicts heavy snowfall, says 5-day wet spell to begin tomorrow
Wattan Daily Reports: The Jammu and Kashmir region is bracing for a five-day wet spell starting tomorrow, with the weatherman predicting light to moderate snowfall from February 17 to 20.
Amidst rising day temperatures, preparations are underway to prevent disruptions to utilities due to the anticipated snowfall.
According to Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological department (MeT), heavy to very heavy snowfall is expected in middle and higher reaches of several districts from February 19-20.
In Kashmir, weather conditions on Feb 17 are expected to be partly to generally cloudy with a possibility of light snow at isolated higher reaches towards late night.
Feb 18 may see light to moderate rain and snow at most places with heavy snowfall over isolated higher reaches of various districts.
From February 19-20, there’s a likelihood of heavy to very heavy snowfall in specific districts, while Feb 21 might see intermittent light to moderate snowfall in many places.
In the Jammu region, light to moderate rain and snow are expected over higher reaches with thunder and lightning on February 18.
On February 19 and 20, intermittent light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is expected in Jammu plains, accompanied by light to moderate snowfall over higher reaches.
Travellers are advised to plan accordingly as road closures in higher reaches and important passes are anticipated due to the weather system.
Farmers are advised to withhold irrigation and fertilizer application and drain excess water from orchards and fields during this period.
Mechanical Engineering Department (MED) Kashmir urges people not to park vehicles on the roadside, as preparations for smooth snow clearance from roads are in place.
Around 300 machines are stationed across districts, with special high-tech snow clearance equipment procured to minimize road damage during clearance operations.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has directed all departments to keep personnel and machinery ready to tackle any emergencies arising from the expected snowfall. Admin on toes, Div Com has directed the concerned Departments to keep men and machinery ready; Meanwhile MED has put all arrangements put in place.(Wattan Daily)
