Gulmarg’s Tourism Triumph: Record-Breaking 1.65 Million Visitors in 2023
Gulmarg, the renowned ski-resort famed for its picturesque landscapes, has achieved a milestone by welcoming an impressive 1.65 million tourists in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s record of 1.5 million. This influx, dominated by foreign visitors, solidifies Gulmarg’s status as a premier destination offering a perfect blend of adventure and natural beauty.
Assistant Director Tourism, Gulmarg, Javeed-ur-Rehman, highlighted the destination’s allure, stating, “Gulmarg is a jewel in the winter tourism crown, offering world-class skiing, mesmerizing views, and genuine Kashmiri hospitality.” Anticipating a surge in tourists, he mentioned an average arrival of 5,000 and noted the significant presence of foreign tourists, especially during the holiday season.
Gulmarg witnessed a remarkable arrival of 10,000 tourists on Christmas Eve alone. The hospitality sector is operating at full capacity, showcasing its readiness to host a large influx. Rehman extended a heartfelt invitation to explore the unmatched beauty of Kashmir, emphasizing the warm hospitality that awaits visitors.
Providing a breakdown of tourist arrivals in 2023, the tourism department revealed monthly figures, with peaks in June and July, recording over 2,00,000 visitors each month. The iconic Gulmarg Gondola, Asia’s highest cable car, remained a major attraction, offering panoramic views of snow-capped peaks.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Gulmarg, Syed Altaf Hussain assured the public of comprehensive preparations for the winter season, emphasizing safety measures, weather updates, and cooperation with authorities. A control room has been established for swift responses to potential weather challenges.
Director Tourism, Raja Yaqoob, highlighted the influx of foreign tourists, expressing the destination’s readiness for winter activities. The upcoming season promises a paradise for adventure enthusiasts with offerings like skiing, snowboarding, gondola rides, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, ice skating, cultural events, and festivals.
As Gulmarg gears up for a winter extravaganza, officials underscore the collaborative efforts to ensure safety, satisfaction, and an unforgettable experience for residents and visitors alike. A dedicated control room and emergency contacts have been established to address any unforeseen challenges during the harsh weather conditions.
