Watermelon in Kashmir safe for Consumption; Expert test Confirms

March 15 (WD) The Food Safety Department of Kashmir has firmly refuted claims of watermelon ripening with chemicals and reassured the public of their dedication to maintaining rigorous food safety standards. Deputy Commissioner Shugufta Jalal emphasized that expert tests conducted across the region have conclusively debunked allegations of premature ripening, ensuring the safety of watermelons for consumption.

These tests, comprising both surveillance and in-depth analysis utilizing advanced equipment, have provided assurance regarding the quality of watermelons available in Kashmir. Contrary to assertions suggesting otherwise, Jalal highlighted that watermelons are grown throughout the year in various parts of India due to the country’s diverse climatic conditions, ensuring their availability in all seasons.

In a proactive measure to ensure food safety, the department has deployed teams and stationed mobile testing vans in key areas across Kashmir. This strategic approach allows for on-the-spot testing, enabling continuous monitoring of the situation and swift response to any potential concerns regarding food safety.

Jalal criticized the actions of an oncologist who made public statements without consulting the authorities, leading to unnecessary panic among the population. Such remarks, she noted, have the potential to cause undue distress and undermine public confidence in the safety of food products.

Reaffirming their commitment to upholding stringent food safety standards, the department vowed to combat misinformation and maintain transparent communication with the public. This commitment includes providing accurate information to address concerns and uphold trust in the safety and quality of food products available in Kashmir.

The controversy originated from a viral social media post by a doctor alleging the artificial ripening of watermelons using chemicals. This raised alarm among consumers, particularly during Ramadan, when watermelons are a staple fruit often consumed during Iftar, highlighting the significance of ensuring the safety of food products during religious observances.

Despite the challenges posed by misinformation, the Food Safety Department remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard consumer health and safety. Through proactive measures, rigorous testing, and transparent communication, they strive to uphold trust and ensure that watermelons and other food products meet stringent safety standards for consumption in Kashmir.
