SMC & JMC Commissioners to act as Administrators for 2 years

J&K November 30;

Srinagar and Jammu Municipal Corporations recently saw the end of their elected representatives’ five-year terms. To navigate this, the government appointed commissioners from SMC and JMC as administrators for the next two years. A recent order from the Housing and Urban Development Department J&K clarified that these commissioners would serve either for two years or until the establishment of the new corporation.

The decision addresses the challenges arising from the conclusion of the elected representatives’ terms. The goal is to ensure smooth administration and enhance public services in Srinagar and Jammu. The order, titled “Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation (Removal of Difficulties) Order, 2023,” takes immediate effect and stays in force for two years or until government revocation.

The appointed administrators are mandated to carry out the functions and duties specified under the Act for their respective Municipal Corporations. This move seeks to bridge the gap created by the expiry of the elected representatives’ terms, providing a temporary solution while maintaining the continuity of essential municipal services. The focus is on sustaining administrative efficiency and ensuring that residents continue to receive the services they rely on during this transitional period.
