Massive Earthquake hits China, 116 killed

A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck northwest China’s Gansu and Qinghai provinces, resulting in a tragic loss of life. The latest reports indicate that 105 individuals lost their lives in Gansu, while another 11 casualties occurred in the neighboring Qinghai province. The seismic event, occurring late on Monday night, left over 230 people injured and caused significant damage to residences, roads, and essential infrastructure.
As of 7:50 am, local authorities in Gansu reported that 105 people were killed, and more than 4,700 houses sustained damage due to the earthquake. By 9:30 am, the number of injuries had risen to 397, as confirmed in a news conference. The catastrophe prompted Chinese President Xi Jinping to issue urgent instructions, emphasizing comprehensive search and rescue operations, proper resettlement of affected populations, and prioritizing efforts to safeguard lives and property.
The earthquake’s impact was severe, leading to collapsed houses and prompting people to seek safety in the streets. Videos shared on social media showcased fallen ceilings and debris, highlighting the extent of the destruction. Power and water supplies were disrupted in local villages, compounding the challenges faced by affected communities.
The epicenter of the earthquake was situated near the border of Gansu and Qinghai provinces, with Haidong located in Qinghai. The US Geological Survey initially recorded a magnitude of 6.0 but later revised it to 5.9. The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers at 11:59 pm local time on Monday, followed by several smaller aftershocks.
Prompt emergency responses were initiated, with rescue personnel dispatched to the affected areas immediately after the quake. Provincial leaders were also en route to coordinate and support the rescue efforts. The earthquake’s epicenter was approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province, according to the USGS.
This tragic incident adds to the history of earthquakes in China, where seismic activity is not uncommon. In August, another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck eastern China, resulting in injuries to 23 people and the collapse of numerous buildings.
