Man Dies, 4 Houses Damaged In srinagar Blaze

A devastating blaze broke out in the Jamallatta Nawakadal area of Srinagar’s old city, resulting in one fatality and damage to four residential houses.

Witnesses reported that the fire started in the residence of Bashir Ahmad Banday and quickly spread to three neighboring structures near Yarbal Masjid, situated along the banks of River Jhelum near Nawakadal Bridge.

Tragically, Bashir Ahmad Banday was trapped inside his house and his body was later recovered from under the debris. Property worth crores was destroyed in the blaze, and firefighting operations were underway with fire tenders from several stations rushing to the scene.

Despite the swift response, the fire caused extensive damage to the congested locality, impacting the residences of Bashir Ahmad Matoo, Noor Mohammad Matoo, and Mohammad Sayeed. The cause of the fire remained undetermined as efforts were focused on extinguishing the flames and rescuing trapped individuals.

Following the incident, the District Administration of Srinagar reached out to the victims in Hawal area, providing immediate assistance in the form of blankets, mattresses, bed sheets, kitchen sets, and funds from the District Red Cross Fund as interim relief.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat expressed sympathy for the affected families and urged the public to exercise caution when using electronic gadgets, LPG cylinders, and other heating or cooking appliances to prevent similar incidents in the future. He emphasized the importance of not leaving such devices unattended to minimize the risk of fires.
