Man Arrested for Assaulting Youth During Cricket Match in Pulwama

Pulwama, 29 May (WD) – Police have arrested 45-year-old Younis Sheikh of Puchal for assaulting and grievously injuring an 18-year-old youth during a cricket match in Lajura, Pulwama. The incident occurred on Tuesday, leading to Sheikh’s detention.

According to official sources, an FIR No 102 has been filed against Younis Sheikh under sections 321 (wrongful restraint) and 323 IPC (causing hurt) in Pulwama police station. He is currently in police custody.

The altercation began during a cricket match when players from two opposing teams argued over the inclusion of a player into the Ratnipora team. This dispute escalated, resulting in Younis Sheikh assaulting Faizan Qayoom of Ratnipora.

Eyewitnesses reported that Younis struck Faizan on the head with a wicket, causing severe injuries. Faizan was immediately rushed to SKIMS by his teammates, where he is currently receiving treatment under medical supervision.

Local cricketers have expressed outrage over the incident, citing Younis Sheikh’s notorious reputation in the area. They have demanded a complete ban on Younis and his team, Haji 11, from participating in any future tournaments within the district.

“His violent behaviour will jeopardise the life of young cricketers if he is allowed to participate in cricket tournaments. For the safety of young players, he must be banned by all tournament organisers henceforth,” several cricketers in Pulwama stated.

Sources revealed that Younis Sheikh is involved in illegal soil mining activities in the Puchal, Lajura, and Malangpora villages. This illegal mining has caused significant damage to the local karewas.

To mask his illicit activities, Younis Sheikh sponsors the Haji 11 cricket team, aiming to gain social acceptance in the community. However, his recent actions have only brought further scrutiny and condemnation from local residents and officials.
