Kupwara Jail Blast: Injured Inmate from Sopore Succumbs

Srinagar, June 24 (WD): An inmate from Sopore, who was injured during a gas cylinder blast in Kupwara sub-jail, has succumbed to his injuries. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning as details continue to emerge about the explosion.

A top official told the Srinagar-based news agency Wattan Daily that the explosion occurred on June 19, resulting in injuries to at least nine inmates. The blast, which was reportedly caused by a cooking gas cylinder, led to immediate chaos and a swift response from the jail authorities and emergency services.

All injured inmates were quickly transferred to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, one of the injured, identified as Shahnawaz Ahmad Shah, son of Sujah Ahmad from Dangerpora Sopore, succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning.

Shahnawaz Ahmad Shah was involved in a case registered under FIR NO 04/2024 at Police Station Tarzoo, related to sections 8, 21, 22, and 29 of the NDPS Act. His death has brought a somber reminder of the harsh realities and dangers present within the prison system.

The authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the explosion. Preliminary reports suggest that it was an accidental blast of a cooking gas cylinder, but further details are awaited to confirm the exact circumstances that led to this unfortunate event.
