KPDCL Disconnects Thousands Of Consumers, Check Why

The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has intensified its drive against non-payment of electricity bills. Thousands of smart-metered consumers have been remotely disconnected for failing to pay their bills on time.

In addition to remote disconnections, consumers in flat-rated areas who have not paid their pending dues for several months are being physically disconnected. These consumers will have their electricity supply restored only after they clear their bills with KPDCL.

According to a KPDCL spokesperson, fervent appeals have been made to consumers to pay their bills on time. The spokesperson emphasized that KPDCL is a service provider that requires timely clearance of bills from all consumers to remain economically viable.

On Thursday, 1,134 smart-metered consumers were disconnected in Electric Division Chanapora. Additionally, 440 consumers in ESD Baramulla I, 240 in ESD Baramulla II, and 228 in ESD Qazigund also had their electricity supply snapped.

The disconnection drive is not limited to these areas, as a large number of consumers are being remotely disconnected across other subdivisions, including Habba Kadal, Watalkadal, Hawal, Anantnag, Kupwara, Handwara, Sopore, Budgam, Chadoora, Zainakote, Zakura, Nishat, and Dalgate.

KPDCL is urging all consumers to cooperate and clear their pending dues to avoid disconnection. The corporation will further accelerate disconnection drives against defaulters who fail to pay their electricity bills on time.

Consumers with huge opening balances are advised to avail themselves of the Government’s Power Amnesty Scheme. They can approach their concerned Electric Subdivision to pay the principal amount in full or installments, enabling them to claim a waiver on late payment surcharge.

To facilitate consumers, KPDCL is organizing Amnesty Camps on a daily basis across all Electric Divisions. So far, over 1 lakh domestic consumers have availed themselves of the benefits of the scheme.
