J&K police sets GPS anklet device rolling for drug smugglers

Jammu and Kashmir Police is expanding its use of GPS anklet trackers to monitor individuals out on bail, this time focusing on drug-related offenses in Kupwara district.

The wearable anklet device enables continuous monitoring of the accused’s movements by law enforcement, providing a tool for surveillance and oversight. Following bail grant in FIR No 283/2022, the ASJ court in Kupwara ordered deployment of GPS trackers on the accused, Abdul Majid Bhat and Aabid Ali Bhat. Kupwara police, led by ASP GM Bhat, DySP Ameen Bhat, and SHO Inspector Ishfaq, complied with the court order, fitting the devices on the accused individuals.

This marks Kupwara police’s first use of GPS technology on accused individuals out on bail, showing proactive steps in surveillance and crime prevention. Previously, in 2023, similar devices were utilized to track terror accused individuals under the UAPA Act, following an order from a special NIA court in Jammu. Police sources emphasize the effectiveness of GPS anklets in monitoring the behavior of those out on bail, aiding in determining their engagement in illegal activities.

The initiative highlights a technological advancement in law enforcement, contributing to efforts to curb various criminal activities, including terrorism and drug smuggling. By affixing GPS anklets on accused individuals, authorities aim to keep a close watch on their movements and activities. This proactive approach enhances law enforcement’s ability to intervene promptly in case of any suspicious behavior or violation of bail conditions.

The deployment of GPS anklets underscores the importance of leveraging technology to enhance surveillance capabilities and ensure public safety. It represents a strategic use of resources to monitor high-risk individuals and prevent them from engaging in further criminal activities while out on bail. Overall, the initiative reflects the commitment of Jammu and Kashmir Police to adopt innovative measures to combat crime and maintain law and order in the region.
