Groom, super-centenarian, selfies and more during voting for Srinagar Lok Sabha polls

Mohammad Ashraf’s unique journey to the polling station in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar constituency, immediately after his wedding, captured attention as he emphasized the importance of voting in the 2024 parliamentary elections. Dressed in traditional attire with henna on his hands, Ashraf urged others not to waste their vote but to exercise their democratic right for the betterment of the state and country.

The polling station witnessed a mix of voters, including centenarians, individuals with disabilities, first-time voters, and those keen to participate despite physical challenges. Among them was Noor Ded, claimed to be 110 years old, who, despite her frailty, was determined to cast her vote, symbolizing the spirit of civic duty transcending age and health constraints.

The elections marked a significant moment for the region, being the first parliamentary polls since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, which led to the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories. Despite past turmoil, voters expressed enthusiasm and determination to engage in the electoral process.

Noorie Begum, another centenarian, highlighted the voters’ aspirations for positive change, emphasizing the importance of electing representatives who would address their concerns, provide employment opportunities, and strive for overall development in the region.

Munawar Khan’s dedication to voting, despite being bedridden due to a leg fracture, exemplified the commitment of citizens towards shaping the future through democratic participation. Khan’s determination reflected a broader sentiment among voters who prioritized exercising their franchise regardless of personal hardships.

The introduction of ‘selfie points’ at polling stations, particularly popular among first-time voters and women, added a contemporary touch to the electoral process, encouraging voter engagement and participation. Additionally, the initiative to establish ‘green booths’ aimed at promoting environmental awareness further enhanced the significance of the electoral event.

The collaborative effort between voters and polling officials to kick-start a plantation drive symbolized a holistic approach towards civic engagement, emphasizing not only political participation but also environmental stewardship and community involvement. Overall, the Srinagar Lok Sabha polls of 2024 showcased a diverse range of voter demographics, each contributing to the democratic process with their unique stories, aspirations, and commitment to shaping a better future for themselves and their region.
