Flash Floods Devastate Ganderbal’s Kangan Subdivision
A cloudburst triggered flash floods in the Kangan subdivision of Ganderbal district, causing widespread destruction in areas like Cherwan and Kawcherwan.
The flash floods struck at 12:30 am on Sunday, resulting in massive damage to residential houses, agricultural land, vehicles, and roads.
The cloudburst led to mudslides along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, endangering nearby residential areas and causing roads, water supply lines, and electricity infrastructure to be damaged.
Locals reported a flood-like situation due to the overwhelming water flow, with several parked vehicles buried under debris.
Residents had alerted authorities about the land sinking over the past few days, and a similar incident had occurred in 2020, resulting in significant losses.
The agricultural sector has suffered substantial losses, with standing crops severely damaged, and the Power Canal becoming blocked due to heavy rainfall.
Authorities, including ADC Ganderbal Gulzar Ahmad, have estimated the damage at Rs 2.20 crore and initiated rescue operations, providing immediate relief to affected families.
The administration has prioritized the restoration of water and electricity and assured support to those affected, with officials visiting the site to assess the situation and provide aid.
