City Commuters Allege Overcharging by E-Autos in Srinagar
Srinagar, Feb 05 (WD): Commuters in Srinagar have raised concerns over the alleged overcharging by electric auto-rickshaws operating in the city. Despite the lower operational costs of electric autos, commuters claim that the fares charged by drivers are comparable to those of petrol-run autos.
Arbeena Mir, a commuter from Bhagaat, voiced her dissatisfaction, stating that electric auto drivers charged the same amount as their petrol counterparts. She emphasized the need for transport authorities to establish a separate rate list for electric autos. Mir recounted instances where she was charged Rs 250 for a 5km ride, calling the situation “insane.”
Firdous Ahmed Bazaz, a resident of B.K Pora and an electric scooter owner, questioned why the government had not introduced a distinct rate list for electric autos. Bazaz highlighted the lower running costs, stating that even if he estimated electricity costs at Rs. 4 per unit, charging an electric auto’s 7.5 kWh lithium-ion battery would cost a maximum of Rs 40.
Syed Shahnawaz Bukhari, the Regional Transport Officer, mentioned that his department has not yet received any complaints regarding overcharging by electric auto drivers. He urged the public to report grievances through the official grievance cell portal for proper investigation, emphasizing that the department can address specific issues only when reported.
Bukhari stated, “If people have such grievances, then they must report them to us via the grievances cell portal provided by the government or reach us directly, and only then can we address those specific issues.” He clarified that the department considers such cases as “allegations” until the accused driver is heard, and if proven, appropriate legal action is taken.(WD)
