3.85 Crore recovered from GST Defaulters. Prime Voilators include Coaching Centres, Brick Kiln & Hoteliers

GST Defaulters Face Record Penalties in Kashmir
Coaching centers, hoteliers, and brick kilns in Kashmir have become major GST defaulters, collectively accruing a record penalty of 3.85 crore rupees by November 2023. The State Taxes Department in the Kashmir Division successfully recovered this substantial sum from April to November 2023, targeting defaulters lacking proper documents such as GST invoices and e-way bills.

Enforcement Drives Target Key Sectors
Special enforcement drives were executed against hotels in Pahalgam and Gulmarg, as well as brick kilns in Central Kashmir, notably in the Budgam District. Additionally, surprise inspections were carried out on coaching centers operating in the valley, as reported by a statement issued to Wattan Daily.

Significant Surge in Penalties
The statement highlights a noteworthy 124% increase in imposed penalties compared to the last fiscal year. Simultaneously, there’s been a substantial 46.13% rise in penalties successfully recovered. Major sectors facing penalties include metal scrap, electric and electronic goods, hotels, brick kilns, and construction materials.

Appreciation for Enforcement Efforts
Shakeel Maqbool, Additional Commissioner of State Taxes Department Administration & Enforcement, Kashmir, commended the performance of officers and urged them to intensify enforcement actions. The emphasis is on creating a strong deterrent effect, particularly targeting transporters carrying goods without proper invoices and e-way bills. The statement also calls for the establishment of surprise checkpoints at various transition points to bolster enforcement efforts– (WD).
