Landslide Tragedy, Over 200 Bodies Recovered from the Site
Tragedy has struck Wayanad, Kerala, where over 200 deaths have been reported due to landslides, according to NDRF DIG Mohsen Shahidi. Bodies are being recovered, and rescue operations are underway.
The landslides occurred in Mundakkai and Churalmala on July 30, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. Over 200 people are injured, and rescue teams are working to reach those affected.
DIG Shahidi stated that sufficient teams of central forces are on the ground to undertake rescue operations. The Indian Army, NDRF, Fire Services, IAF, and ICG are among the teams involved.
Rescue operations are focused on three locations: Attamala, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala. The Indian Army is coordinating with other rescue teams to search for missing persons and provide aid.
Major General VT Mathew, in charge of the Indian Army’s rescue operations, met with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to update him on the situation. Assistant collectors from nearby districts have been deployed to support the Wayanad district administration.
An all-party meeting was held in Wayanad to discuss the situation, chaired by CM Vijayan. He assured that rescue and rehabilitation efforts will be undertaken as soon as possible and appreciated the efforts of the Army in coordinating rescue operations.
The Indian Coast Guard Disaster Relief Team is also on the ground, working with other agencies to provide aid and support. The Indian Army has constructed an improvised bridge to aid in rescue operations and evacuate stranded people.
