UGC Announces Non-Recognition of M.Phil. Degree, Urges Universities to stop Admissions
New Delhi, Dec 27 (WD):
On Wednesday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) declared that the M.Phil. degree is not recognized, in accordance with Clause 14 of the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022. The UGC’s notification brings attention to the fact that certain universities are currently soliciting applications for the M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) program, emphasizing that this degree lacks recognition.
The notification, available to Daily Spark News, highlights Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations 2022. This regulation explicitly prohibits Higher Educational Institutions from offering the M.Phil. program. The UGC’s official document (https://www.ugc.gov.in/pdfnews/0909572 Minimum-Standards-and-Procedure-for-Award-of-PhD-Degree.pdf) outlines these standards.
Furthermore, the UGC informed that it has established the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, which was officially published in the Gazette of India on November 7, 2022.
In light of this, university authorities are urged to promptly cease admissions to the M.Phil. program for the academic year 2023-24. The notification also advises prospective students against seeking admission to the M.Phil. Program.
