CBSE Alters Grading System for 10th and 12th Board Exams in 2024
In a recent press release, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced a significant shift in its grading system for the upcoming class 10 and 12 board examinations. According to Dr Sanyam Bharadwaj, CBSE Controller of Examinations, the decision eliminates the traditional awards of ‘overall division/distinction/aggregate.’
The decision, outlined in sub-section 40.1 (iii) of Chapter -7 of the Examination Bye-Laws, indicates a departure from the conventional practice of categorizing students based on divisions and distinctions.
Furthermore, the press release clarified that candidates offering more than five subjects would have the discretion to select the best five subjects, a decision to be made by the admitting institution or employer.
Addressing concerns about percentage calculation, CBSE emphasized that it does not calculate, inform, or declare the percentage of marks. This responsibility falls upon the admitting institution or employer, particularly if needed for higher education or employment purposes.
The decision has garnered positive feedback, with Sanyogita Sharma, Director of Manav Rachna International Schools, expressing support. Sharma views this move as a welcome change aligned with the essence of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. She believes it reflects a commitment to reduce academic pressure, promote holistic education, and address mental health concerns associated with high-stakes exams.
Sharma acknowledges potential concerns about students’ motivation and recognition of their achievements. However, she suggests that clear guidance on performance indicators could mitigate these concerns, making the decision favorable for every child.
