Water level in Jhelum hits lowest as dry spell continues in Kashmir
Srinagar, Jan 14 (WD):
The current dry spell in Kashmir has resulted in the Jhelum river experiencing its lowest water levels. As of Sunday, the river was flowing at -0.75 feet at Sangam (Anantnag district) and -0.86 feet at Asham (Bandipora district), marking the lowest recorded water levels. This situation resembles the levels observed in November 2017 at Sangam.
The prolonged dry spell in Kashmir has been characterized by minimal snowfall and a 79% deficit in December rainfall. This weather pattern has impacted various areas, including the Gulmarg ski resort, which lacks its usual snow cover. The lack of precipitation has not only affected the plain areas of Kashmir but also led to reduced snowfall in the upper reaches of the valley.
Due to the dry weather, a significant number of bushfires have been reported from hilly areas across the valley. In response to this, the Forest Department has issued advisories to people living in forested areas, emphasizing precautions and safety measures to mitigate the risk of fires in these dry conditions- (Wattan Daily English/Urdu)
