Divisional Commissioners & IG Police to get powers under UAPA

The Jammu and Kashmir Government has authorized the Inspector Generals of Police in the Kashmir and Jammu Zones to wield the powers outlined in Section 7 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967.
In addition to this, Divisional Commissioners in Kashmir and Jammu are empowered to exercise the authority under Section 8 of UAPA 1967 within their respective territorial domains.
This directive, endorsed by Financial Commissioners (Additional Chief Secretary) Home RK Goyal, has received the approval of the Central Government through the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
It is pertinent to mention here that The Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) is a law in India aims at curbing unlawful activities and terrorism. Enacted in 1967, it grants special powers to authorities for preventing and dealing with activities posing a threat to the country’s integrity and security. The UAPA allows for the banning of terrorist organizations, their support, and penalizes individuals involved in such activities. It empowers law enforcement agencies to take preventive actions and detain suspects. The Act plays a crucial role in maintaining national security by providing a legal framework to combat and prevent activities that undermine the sovereignty and harmony of the nation.
