J&K Assembly Elections: Poll Dates to be Announced After Security Review
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has announced that the exact dates for the J&K Assembly polls will be revealed after a final security requirement assessment in Delhi.
The CEC emphasized that the Election Commission of India (ECI) is committed to holding the polls at the earliest and that small attempts to disrupt the process won’t be allowed to derail it.
Addressing a press conference in Jammu, Kumar stated that the ECI doesn’t want to see a “Chicken and Egg” situation in J&K due to some terror attacks in the region.
He expressed confidence in the capabilities of the security forces to handle the situation and ensure peaceful elections.
The CEC mentioned that all J&K political parties are on the same page, demanding early polls, a level playing field, and streamlining of security cover.
He highlighted the successful conduct of Lok Sabha polls in J&K, where people participated in record numbers, and assured that the ECI will ensure a level playing field and security review for politicians.
Kumar also addressed concerns about polling stations being clubbed at the last minute, stating that it won’t happen except for geographical reasons.
The electoral rolls for the J&K Assembly polls are set to be published on August 20, with the CEC emphasizing that no internal or external force can delay the polls.
