J&K Witnesses Alarming Number of Road Accidents
Jammu and Kashmir has recorded a staggering 28,172 road accidents over the past five years, resulting in 8,965 fatalities and 36,615 injuries.
According to the Government of India, the region has consistently seen a high number of road accidents, with 2018 recording 5,978 accidents, 2019 seeing 5,796 accidents, and 2020 witnessing 4,860 accidents.
The year 2021 saw an increase in accidents, with 5,452 reported, and 2022 recorded the highest number of accidents in five years, with 6,092 incidents.
The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Jairam Gadkari, disclosed the figures in a written statement to the Rajya Sabha.
To address road safety challenges, the ministry has implemented several measures, including the Road Safety Advocacy Scheme and observing National Road Safety Month/Week annually.
The ministry is also working on establishing Institutes of Driving Training & Research (IDTRs), Regional Driving Training Centres (RDTCs), and Driving Training Centres (DTCs) across the country.
Additionally, several vehicle safety initiatives have been introduced, such as mandatory airbags for front-seat passengers and safety norms for young children riding on motorcycles.
The government’s efforts aim to reduce the number of road accidents and promote road safety awareness in Jammu and Kashmir and across India.
