Muslim Students Challenge Hijab Ban in Supreme Court

Muslim Students Challenge Hijab Ban in Supreme Court

A group of Muslim students from a Mumbai college have filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Bombay High Court’s decision to uphold a ban on wearing hijabs in college.

The students argue that the ban is discriminatory and violates their fundamental rights to privacy, dignity, and religious freedom.

The petitioners claim that the prohibition on wearing hijabs has led to indirect discrimination against female Muslim students, resulting in stigmatization and victimization.

The students had earlier approached the Bombay High Court, which dismissed their plea, leading them to file a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has assigned a bench to hear the matter, which will be listed soon for disposal.

The students contend that the college’s decision to impose a dress code banning hijabs is arbitrary, unreasonable, and violates their constitutional rights.

The petitioners are seeking relief from the Supreme Court, arguing that the hijab ban is a violation of their rights and freedoms.

This case is significant, as it raises important questions about religious freedom, discrimination, and the rights of Muslim students in India.
