Nearly 4400 Government Schools Closed Due to Low Enrollment in J&K

Shocking State of Education: Nearly 4400 Govt Schools Closed in JK

In a disturbing revelation, nearly 4400 government-run schools in Jammu and Kashmir have been closed due to zero or extremely low student enrollment.

According to official documents, out of 23,117 government schools, 4394 have been deleted from the UDISE+ list, citing low enrollment as the reason.

The primary schools category was hit the hardest, with a reduction of nearly 30% in the number of functional schools. From 12,977 government primary schools, only 8966 are now functional.

In addition, 392 government middle schools, three high schools, and one higher secondary school were also deleted from the UDISE+ list.

The official figures reveal that the total number of government and private schools in Jammu and Kashmir has reduced from 28,805 to 24,279.

The School Education Department had previously identified over 1200 government schools with low enrollment, planning to merge them based on catchment and feasibility.

In April 2022, the department announced plans to merge 720 government-run schools with inadequate student enrollment.

This shocking state of education in Jammu and Kashmir raises concerns about the future of education in the region.
