Youth drowns in Jhelum in Bandipora, rescue on

Srinagar, July 04 (WD): A youth drowned in the river Jhelum while taking a bath in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Thursday. The incident has left the local community in shock and prompted immediate rescue efforts.

An official from the News Agency Wattan daily reported that the youth, identified as 19-year-old Nadeem, son of Zahoor Ahmad, was a resident of Mir Mohalla Hajin. Nadeem had gone to the river near Jamia at Hajin Bandipora for a bath when the tragic incident occurred.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said that Nadeem was enjoying the water with friends when he suddenly disappeared beneath the surface. Despite frantic attempts by his friends to save him, he could not be found. The strong currents of the river are believed to have played a role in the drowning.

As soon as the news of the incident spread, a rescue operation was launched by the local authorities. Teams equipped with necessary gear arrived at the scene and began their search for the missing youth. The operation has been challenging due to the depth and flow of the river.

Family members and friends of Nadeem have gathered at the riverbank, anxiously awaiting news of the rescue efforts. The community has expressed its solidarity with the grieving family, offering prayers and support during this difficult time.

Local police have taken cognizance of the incident and have started an investigation. They are trying to determine the exact circumstances that led to Nadeem’s drowning. Statements from witnesses and friends who were present at the time are being collected.

The tragedy has highlighted the need for increased safety measures and awareness about the dangers of swimming in rivers, especially during the summer months when many youths seek relief from the heat in local water bodies. Authorities are urging people to exercise caution and avoid risky areas.

Efforts to rescue Nadeem are ongoing, with teams working tirelessly to locate him. The local community remains hopeful and united in their prayers for a positive outcome.
