Srinagar, Jan 18 (WD): Amidst the prolonged dry spell gripping Kashmir, a potential respite seems on the horizon as meteorological projections hint at the likelihood of moderate snowfall between January 29 and January 31. Officials from the local Meteorological department in Srinagar have indicated that a clearer forecast will be provided in the coming days.
“At present, the system indicates the possibility of light to moderate snowfall in Kashmir from January 29 to January 31. However, further clarity on the forecast is expected in the coming days,” stated Dr Mukhtar Ahmad to news agency.
During the ongoing dry spell, communities have engaged in special prayers, ‘Salat-ul-Istisqa,’ at local Masjids, seeking divine intervention to alleviate the prevailing weather conditions. The extended dry period has not only led to a decline in water levels in rivers and streams but has also resulted in a reduction in tourist activity.
Despite the overall dry conditions, some areas experienced light snowfall today under the influence of a weak Western Disturbance (WD). Doodhpatri, Sinthan top, and other regions reported light snowfall.
Another feeble WD is anticipated to affect Jammu and Kashmir on the night of January 20, bringing the possibility of light rain and snow over isolated middle and higher reaches. Between January 25-27, there is also a chance of light rain and snowfall at a few places, according to Dr Mukhtar.
Furthermore, today marked a slight improvement in night temperatures, with Srinagar recording a minimum temperature of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, registered a low of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam reclaimed its position as the coldest place at minus 3.9 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg, renowned for its ski resort, recorded a low of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, and Kokernag and Kupwara reported minimum temperatures of minus 1.1 degrees Celsius and minus 4.3 degrees Celsius, respectively.
